Post Cleanse Bliss...

Some of the biggest and genuine smiles I've seen are on the people that live in poor economies, have barely any money to their name, struggle to put food on the table and work their hands to the bone but you wouldn't be the wiser based on their positive disposition and attitude towards life.

Happiness is free, of course money plays can offer a lot of assistance in a lot of areas of life. Lack of funds can create a significant amount stress, yet happiness can stem from so much more than materialistic items.

Being happy is a choice, and circumstances can obviously play a part and put a spanner in the works in how you feel but dwelling on things that are out of out control or playing the victim doesn't help especially if the situation is unavoidable.

With the seasons changing and my life reeling with the multitude of opportunities to decide on for the next chapter. I decided to take a step back, regain control and cleanse my body of all stimulants (sugar, caffeine, alcohol and meat, for the last 21 days. It's been pretty challenging, however it's given me a whole new appreciation for the simple things in life.

Here's a list of things that should create a smile:

1. Clean Eating...

Your diet can dictate your mood and energy levels. Fueling yourself with the nutrition it craves with a balanced diet has a domino effect of positives! It can make you feel good from the inside out, you lower your risk of health problems, help maintain a healthy weight which can increase self confidence. I've been caffeine and sugar dependent for most of my life and after cutting out these two elements of my diet, it's really highlighted the amount of "treats" I was allowing myself. I mean lets just look at this situation... what the hell am I treating myself for? It's not like I'm achieving any great goals that a sweet sugary item will actually be an appropriate reward for, the truth is it feels amazing for the split second I'm eating it and then I feel lethargic and gross. The first few days of withdrawing (because you do) from sugar and caffeine were horrendous, so it leaves me asking myself; is it worth the comedown?? Small changes can make a massive difference and listening to what my body is asking me for and acknowledging the way it reacts when things are put in or taken away, is giving me a natural energy boost instead of seeking it from other sources,

2. Open up and show your appreciation...

Who doesn't love a big bear hug? What if I told you it's been scientifically proven hugging is extremely effective at boosting your serotonin levels thus relieving anxiety, self doubt, loneliness and aids in heightened happiness. It's reported regularly hugging can assist against illness and depression.

I spend my whole life running around trying to fit in too many things into a day and only half being in each of these situations. What i'm working hard on this winter is slowing it down and being more present. Make sure you have enough time out to be with the people you're spending time with, don't rush to your next appointment, don't have a tight time frame on your visits, when you're there listen, turn off your devices!

3. Listen to your Soul...

It comes as no surprise that music has the power to affect your mood. Use this to your advantage and make a feel good playlist of tunes to escape the world for a little while. Listening to music that you love has the ability to release dopamine in your brain which makes you happy! One of the best things about travelling in the van is blasting out my playlists when we're on the road. I use Spotify and I'm constantly creating new playlists based on their suggestions in my discover weekly.

4. Puppy love...

Hopefully you've had the opportunity to experience coming home to a furry friend wagging their tail and stoked to see you! Having a companion that loves you unconditionally is one of the best feelings. If you're feeling blue or just looking for a general pick me up then take your pup for a well deserved walk the exercise is beneficial regardless and being in their company is second to none!

In January last year I adopted Buster from a shelter in Portugal and every day he has enhanced my life. I've never felt the unconditional love we have for each other before and it's life changing. I was recently asked if i feel trapped or restricted by him and the truth is not one bit! he's the best dog in the whole world and we can do anything together.

5. Social Detox and Emotional Clearing...

Get involved with people that make you feel good about yourself and let go of anyone that has a negative impact on your life! Detox your friends - It'll make you feel so much better in the long run to cleanse out the toxic ones. Don't waste your time being involved with people who slander you, make you feel inadequate, drag you down and just generally don't make you happy. It's okay to have personal boundaries and respect yourself enough to walk away! Manifest what you put out and surround yourself with a solid group of people that have your best interests at heart, make you laugh and challenge you to be better!

6. Freshen up your surroundings...

I don't know if this is just me but I love getting into a clean fluffy bed after a hot shower and smelling the fresh fragrance of fabric softener! Life sometimes needs a freshen up to. I know most people have most commitments than myself and we can't all just run off to pastures new, but we can change what our day to day looks like. Get yourself out in to nature a little more, go and watch the sunset, get up early one morning and see the sunrise, take a walk in the woods. Being with Buster around Norfolk these past few months has really made me look at where I'm from through a different perspective, we'[re blessed with beautiful trails and coastal walks and we're lucky enough to get out and enjoy them every day!

7. Be kind...

Speak to the elderly, interact with animals and listen to strangers, sometimes this quirky characters have some of the wisest insights into the world. if you have time why not volunteer somewhere or do something nice for someone for no reason other than you want to! Helping others feels damn good! Even if they don't necessarily need help acting out of genuine kindness with no hidden agenda or secret expectations can leave you grinning ear to ear. You don't need to broadcast your good deeds over Facebook or boast about it either. You shouldn't need to be praised by anyone else to know you've done a good thing, be satisfied within yourself.

9. Get more sleep...

Who doesn't love a bit of shut eye? Your body needs to recharge, especially your brain! It doesn't take a genius to know that when you're tired or run down you are more inclined to get cranky and irritable. Even if you are not aware of it when you are sleep deprived your emoticons will cause havoc and register things in a negative way than if you got an adequate amount of sleep. Caffeine among other stimulants have aided me in the ability to need little or no sleep for some time, cutting out these things has for sure made me more tired, but i'd rather be sleeping when my body tells me it needs it than borrowing and being in eternal dept to the sleep bank!

10. Try new things...

It can be anything you won't know what you really enjoy unless you give it a go! You don't need too be great at whatever it is, just investing time into something that brings you joy should be satisfaction enough. Eventually you can take it more seriously if you choose to, but nobody became a professional overnight. I'm not a very talented athlete and I've given lots of different activities a go throughout my life with nothing truly sticking or becoming my 'hobby' however I've recently discovered Yoga, something I am not hugely talented at, but it's something that gives me a huge amount of feel good energy and that I'll be perusing much more in my future. Try everything you can and find something that makes you feel good and enjoy it!

11. Take a Dip...

I need to be close to water to feel 100% content. Water has a calming force and going for a cheeky dip can be so refreshing and cleansing for the soul. Even if you're not much of a swimmer sitting on the sand watching the waves crash can be so relaxing, putting you in to a meditative state which has countless benefits for your state of mind and emoticons! Being landlocked will never work for me, however the North Sea is too dirty and cold for me to even consider a swim, but Buster and I dip our toes on almost every morning to wake us up and reflect on how grateful we are and to start our days right.

Fall in love with your own life, make yourself smile and others will smile around you!!
